Originally sung and recorded by Air Supply (1980), this arrangement The arrangement explores contrapuntal textures in the style of the 16th century composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1526 - 1594).

Formally, the arrangement includes a newly composed introduction and transitions between the verses. These are based on the opening four notes of the song's melody and become a motive for some of the accompanying textures to the melody. The soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts are often divided to create elaborate contrapuntal textures. While the textures of the arrangement refer to polyphonic writing of the 16th century, the harmonies are based on extended chords alluding to Impressionism. 2. Lost on love

Composed by Graham Russell, 1980;  Arranged by Richard Vella 2026

Chamber Choir (SSS AAA TT BB)

Piano

Duration: 4m 14s

Based on the song’s original verses, chorus and bridge, this arrangement includes new material at the beginning and new transitions between the verses and chorus. Harmonically, the music is based on the original song’s opening major ninth chord consisting of two fifths (G-D, D-A). These intervals are reconfigured to form new chords built on perfect fifths reminiscent of the harmonies found in ‘The Sunken Cathedral’ by Claude Debussy (1862 – 1918). The vocal writing moves between textures based on homophony and polyphony. The MP3 audio file is a demo recording using voice plug-ins.

3. Making love out of nothing at all

Composed by Jim Steinmann 1982;

Arranged by Richard Vella 2026

Chamber Choir (SSS AAA TT BB),

Piano Pipe Organ, optional low tom-tom drum

Duration: 5m 43s

This arrangement of ‘Making love out of nothing at all’ can be performed by a choir (SATB) with dedicated soloists, or a chamber choir (10 singers: SSS-AAA-TT-BB). Either version includes piano, pipe organ and an optional low register tom-tom drum. The soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts are often divided to create elaborate contrapuntal textures. If a chamber choir performs the arrangement, the solo parts are not fixed and can be sung by the most appropriate voice from the choir for the phrase concerned.

Composed by Jim Steinmann (1947 – 2021), ‘Making love out of nothing at all’ was originally sung and recorded by Air Supply in 1983. The optional low tom-tom drum can be replaced by a similar low register drum, or a tympani tuned to G. Because the optional drum part is very simple and only used to accent some phrases, it can be performed by one of the singers. If a pipe organ is not available, a keyboard synthesiser can be used. Wherever possible, the keyboard player merges the pipe organ’s pedal notes into the left-hand part (for example: the opening pedal part can be played by the left hand).

This arrangement belongs to a set of three arrangements of songs recorded by Air Supply. The other two arrangements are ‘All out of love’ (1980), and ‘Lost in love’ (1980). Formally, the arrangement adheres to the original song’s organisation of verses and chorus. Stylistically, the arrangement subtly alludes to the Baroque era such as the opening pipe organ ostinato of the Passacaglia in C minor by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). While Steinmann’s backing vocal writing is retained in the arrangement, included are newly added vocal parts reminiscent of the polyphonic writing found in some of choral works by George Frideric Handel (1685 – 1759). In order to match the impact of Jim Steinmann’s production and orchestration of his power ballad, the added vocal part writing, pipe organ and piano have been added to give dramatic depth to the arrangement. The MP3 audio file is a demo recording using voice plug-ins.
