Haiku
for youth (or mixed) choir and prepared piano

Date: 1978 (2022)

Duration: approximately 25 minutes

Haiku was originally written for female voice and prepared piano while studying composition at La Trobe University, Melbourne. It was first performed  in Melbourne in 1978 with the vocal part sung by Tina Westaway, and the piano part played by the composer.

This version for youth or mixed choir is a transcription of the original 1978 version with minor alterations. The only differences from the original version are the use of vocal harmonies in some of the songs, and the arrangement of the original vocal part for high, middle and low children's voices.

Various selections of songs can also be performed instead of the whole work. For example: 1. First winter rain, 2. Long rain of May, 6. Spring has come,  10. Passing Spring,  12. At Sunrise.

A performance without piano preparations is possible although any direction requiring stopping a piano string, glissando on the inside of the piano, or piano harmonics, is to be observed.
