Seven Miniature solos for reed instruments

for Flute; Oboe; Bb Clarinet; Soprano Saxophone; or Alto Saxophone

Date: 1976.    Duration: 9m

These solos were originally written for Oboe or Bb Clarinet but can also be performed by flute, soprano and alto saxophone. Due to transposition limitations when applied to the saxophone, various movements have been transposed appropriately.

The seven solos were written while studying composition at La Trobe University, Australia. They focus on melodic organisation, extended and reduced phrasing, uses of intervallic and modal harmonies, and articulation.

In transcribing the original handwritten solos into the Finale notation program, some minor adjustments were made regarding note durations. These changes are insignificant and relate more to giving a performer more time with some of the notes. The most significant revisions occur in Solo V with the addition of optional flutter tongue; and in Solo VI where the melody is extended with the addition of a retrograde version of the melody. This was done to extend Solo VI's overall duration.
